Coca Cola’s secret is out there.

An intriguing Wieden+Kennedy, Portland integrated campaign for Coca-Cola is returning to that perennial mystery: what is the special formula contained within the famous drink?

Who knows the secret ingredients? How is the secret formula protected? Who is Doc. Pemberton? We’ve released this video in an attempt to shed some light on the answers… but many more are out there. You just need to know where to look. Hint: unlock bottles.

There’s a perception that playing alternate reality games demands extensive time commitments that developers don’t have. And since ARGs have indefinite lengths, it can be even harder to commit to a game. However, if you find yourself unable to drop in and interact with an ongoing game, I would argue that’s a design flaw that you should internalize. […]
Every ARG should have actionable and entertaining elements that can be enjoyed with relatively little knowledge of the game’s intricacies. And the best ARGs tend to provide these opportunities at regular intervals.

ARG Update

INCEPTION: “Your mind is the scene of the crime.”

ARG / viral campaign for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie ‘Inception’ coming this July.

The story:

“I specialize in a very specific type of security: subconscious security”

“You’re talking about dreams?”

Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), the main protagonist of Inception, is a “skilled thief in the art of ‘extraction’, stealing secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb’s rare ability has made him valuable in corporate espionage. In one last job, he must cause an ‘inception’ – instead of stealing an idea, he must plant one.”

Christopher Nolan’s new movie coming this July, Inception, is a sci-fi, futuristic thriller that explores the human mind. Nolan is also known for his movie viral campaigns, with the notable ARG “Why So Serious?” created for Batman Begins’ sequel, The Dark Knight. Set as tools to build anticipation and enhance worldbuilding, these campaigns are usually pretty effective.  For Inception’s ARG-like viral campaign, people are acquainted with the fiction universe through various websites, blogs, posters, and (real) physical artefacts.

And this is what you missed on Glee
In April, at WonderCon, people wore t-shirts with a website adress: passivdevice.org. The website was actually an interactive instruction manual on the PASIV device, the one that allows the movie’s characters to infiltrate people’s dreams. The website then led to mind-crime.com. There you could play a mini-game. You have to find a target through a maze, and avoid your hostile facebook contacts (they try to kill you).

On the video front, a youtube video called “Christopher Nolan Research Footage”, was discovered by a member of the Nolan Fans forum when he searched for “Cpt Darren Bartel” after finding a poster in the Mind Crime game with a note that said “Send to Cpt Darren Bartel”. It shows Nolan getting video research about dreams from various dream / sleep experts. Apparently, the first two experts are real specialists, while the Sarah Palin look-alike would be an actress. They mention Somnacin, a military project for mind-control. Wired Magazine has also written an article about a strange physical manual sent to them (Dream-Share: Tactical Employment Procedures), visibly censored, and dealing with mind control and torture techniques.

These last days, posters urging people to “protect their thoughts” and warning them against “thought theft” appeared in the streets of several cities. The posters have QR codes which lead to a blog - whatisdreamshare -, set up by someone eager to unveil the mind theft conspiracy…

The campaign in itself is said to have 4 phases: phase 3 and 4 are still around the corner. Get up to date with this ARG at these links:

Super 8 Update

ARG for JJ Abrams / Spielberg’s upcoming movie ‘Super 8’.

Not much is known about the story or the plot of the movie, however, most speculations revolve around this version:

“Super 8”, which he is co-producing with Steven Spielberg, is a supernatural tale rumored to be set at the end of the 1970s and focus on a group of kids who with a series of Super 8 cameras film something not of this world according to the Heat Vision/Hollywood Reporter blog site.

The countdown to the server ended on May 13th, and released a couple of press clips featuring an ad leading to a website (http://www.rocketpoppeteers.com/), but it’s down. There were also highlighted words in the press article. No major clues or reveals at the moment.

On a less factual note, here is a thread (@ Unforums) trying to tie in all the clues and elements at hand into a speculated story:

A train left Area 51, headed for Ohio (destination not disclosed).

The Air Force Symbol on the train indicates that it’s owned/operated by the USAF.

Since it was leaving Area 51, we have to figure that the train first came from an USAF base or is heading to one after leaving Area 51 with the cargo.

I will accept the idea that kids(most likely teenagers or college students) have inadvertently captured footage of whatever is in the train that breaks out.

Someone from the group to witness the event, showed the footage publicly somehow.

This is what prompts the message on the PDP of stop posting publicly.

An article on the first great radio hoax, as perpetrated by Ronald Knox (Anglican priest and Chaplain of Trinity College, Oxford) on BBC Radio in 1926.

Unemployed demonstration in London. The crowd has now passed along Whitehall and, at the suggestion of Mr Popplebury, Secretary of the National Movement for Abolishing Theatre Queues, is preparing to demolish the Houses of Parliament with trench mortars. […] The clock tower, 320 feet in height, has just fallen to the ground, together with the famous clock Big Ben, which used to strike the hours on a bell weighing nine tons.

May 6th 2010, after analyzing the bootlegged teaser trailer, the words “scariest thing i ever saw” were found at the trailing end of the film reel, leading to the website, [which led to a server countdown…]

So far, we’re at 12 300 / 13 4640 bytes to access the file list B4. Who knows what might be released then. I’m not good at maths but I’m expecting the countdown to end today (Thursday May 13th). Also, here is a picture of a message you can print from the server saying: “Stop posting publicly. I can answer your questions. I have proof”. (source: Super8Wiki)

That all sounds good.
