ARG Update

INCEPTION: “Your mind is the scene of the crime.”

ARG / viral campaign for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie ‘Inception’ coming this July.

The story:

“I specialize in a very specific type of security: subconscious security”

“You’re talking about dreams?”

Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), the main protagonist of Inception, is a “skilled thief in the art of ‘extraction’, stealing secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb’s rare ability has made him valuable in corporate espionage. In one last job, he must cause an ‘inception’ – instead of stealing an idea, he must plant one.”

Christopher Nolan’s new movie coming this July, Inception, is a sci-fi, futuristic thriller that explores the human mind. Nolan is also known for his movie viral campaigns, with the notable ARG “Why So Serious?” created for Batman Begins’ sequel, The Dark Knight. Set as tools to build anticipation and enhance worldbuilding, these campaigns are usually pretty effective.  For Inception’s ARG-like viral campaign, people are acquainted with the fiction universe through various websites, blogs, posters, and (real) physical artefacts.

And this is what you missed on Glee
In April, at WonderCon, people wore t-shirts with a website adress: passivdevice.org. The website was actually an interactive instruction manual on the PASIV device, the one that allows the movie’s characters to infiltrate people’s dreams. The website then led to mind-crime.com. There you could play a mini-game. You have to find a target through a maze, and avoid your hostile facebook contacts (they try to kill you).

On the video front, a youtube video called “Christopher Nolan Research Footage”, was discovered by a member of the Nolan Fans forum when he searched for “Cpt Darren Bartel” after finding a poster in the Mind Crime game with a note that said “Send to Cpt Darren Bartel”. It shows Nolan getting video research about dreams from various dream / sleep experts. Apparently, the first two experts are real specialists, while the Sarah Palin look-alike would be an actress. They mention Somnacin, a military project for mind-control. Wired Magazine has also written an article about a strange physical manual sent to them (Dream-Share: Tactical Employment Procedures), visibly censored, and dealing with mind control and torture techniques.

These last days, posters urging people to “protect their thoughts” and warning them against “thought theft” appeared in the streets of several cities. The posters have QR codes which lead to a blog - whatisdreamshare -, set up by someone eager to unveil the mind theft conspiracy…

The campaign in itself is said to have 4 phases: phase 3 and 4 are still around the corner. Get up to date with this ARG at these links:
